Listed below are some frequently asked questions. If you don’t see your question on here, please feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to answer them! Links to shoes and wigs used by SESID are included in these questions.
What should my dancer wear to class? Shorts and t-shirt with socks and either tennis shoes/dance sneakers (for first time students) or the Irish dance ghillies should be worn. SESID periodically does a group shoe order particularly around the time new students come in but if shoes are needed and a group order is not currently being done, you can go to Ballinvilla Products (Ballinvilla Products) to order shoes. We recommend Pacelli Gazelles softshoes for starters. Crocks and non-dance shoes except tennis shoes or dance sneakers are not allowed to be worn in class. Instructors must be able to see your dancer’s knees so street clothing (i.e. jeans, long skirts/ dresses, etc. are not allowed to be worn in class). Fitted dance pants and tanks are allowed as long as you are fully covered on top (waist not showing). Hair must be pulled back away from face as this is very distracting to an instructor and other students.
Are dancers required to have a costume to compete or perform? Yes. If a student plans to perform or compete while at SESID, they must purchase a school costume. Younger beginner dances are required to wear the school jumper. Older dancers and Advanced dancers will be required to wear the school dress. Adults have a separate costume that is worn. SESID has a standard summer costume that is worn by all ages and levels of dancers in the summer. Please inquire about what costume is right for your dancer. Brand new dancers who have not yet had the opportunity to order a school costume may wear black dance pants and white SESID t-shirt (t-shirt is given to you at time of registration) until you can order a school costume. SESID has a seamstress on staff that custom makes our costumes. Check the school handbook for more detailed information.
Are students required to compete or perform? SESID does not require any student to compete or perform if they do not wish to. If a student does choose to compete or perform, we do require they follow school guidelines and policies in regards to requirements for that. We do expect students performing to plan on scheduled rehearsals for shows and to be at those rehearsals.
What about wigs and where can I get one? Most performances require us to be in full costume including a wig. Competition will require a wig particularly for a little more advanced dancers. The wig is curley—this is traditional for Irish dance. You do have the option to curl your own hair and there are sponge/spike curler kits available in stores for this. There may be times a wig is not necessary and we will let you know but do plan to have one as part of your school costume. We typically order our wigs from Youngblood Haircutters (Youngblood Haircutters) and we have a hair color sample ring available at the studio. The style most used is the “Megan” and the “Jordan” is also used.
When can my dancer begin to compete? Dancers can begin to compete at the beginner level as long as they have at least one reel step or jig step. They can begin competing as young as 5 yrs. old. SESID is a fully-certified Irish step dancing school and all students registered with the school taking regular classes are eligible to compete. Please see Wendy and/or your school handbook for more information about competition.
When can my dancer start Irish hardshoe? This is based on your child’s progress in his/her classes and past experience. Please see one of the instructors for more information about the hardshoe.
